Krug Grande Cuvée 158ème Édition

Composed around the harvest of 2002

Krug Grande Cuvée is born from the dream of one man, Joseph Krug, to craft the very best Champagne he could offer, every single year, regardless of annual variations in climate. Since 1843, the House of Krug has honoured this vision with each new Édition of Krug Grande Cuvée: the most generous expression of Champagne.

Krug Grande Cuvée is re-created every year, beyond the notion of vintage and is a blend of over 120 individual wines from more than 10 different years. The fullness or flavours and aromas achieved by this careful art of blending would be impossible to express with the wines of a single year.

A talk with Julie Cavil

Krug Cellar Master

Krug Grande Cuvée is born from the dream of one man, Joseph Krug, to craft the very best Champagne he could offer, every single year, regardless of annual variations in climate. Each year, the House of Krug honours this dream with a new Édition of Krug Grande Cuvée: the most generous expression of Champagne.
Krug Grande Cuvée 158ème Édition was composed around the harvest of 2002. The high point of this remarkably clement year was its long summer of warm days and cool nights that offered the ideal conditions for grape maturation. The harvest began in mid-September and when the grapes arrived at the press, they were in excellent condition and fine health.
When the wines of the year were tasted, they showed a beautiful structure, great intensity and elegance. Their generosity was so astonishing that it seemed as if each one had already benefitted from the art of blending.
The challenge was to find the reserve wines in the House's extensive library that would best complement the remarkable character of the wines of the year. Ultimately, a careful selection, predominantly from the 1990s, made up 42% of the blend. These brought the opulence and roundness so essential to every Édition of Krug Grande Cuvée.

Ratings

"This is a silky textured high class Champagne that combines generous richness and maturity with purity, finesse and tension. The citrus-flavored finish reveals great complexity and length and makes the 158ème Édition (the first release with the edition number displayed on the bottle) a perfect cuvée for Sunday morning brunch, although there is no need to change the wine for lunch or teatime or for any other day of the week. You just should have some bottles of the 158th Édition."
