The Krug Way

Craftsmanship

Close up of grapes being harvested

Since 1843, Maison Krug has been guided by the vision of Joseph Krug to craft the very best champagne he could offer, every year, regardless of annual climate variations. True to his founding philosophy, each year Krug creates a new Édition of Krug Grande Cuvée, the most generous expression of Champagne. As of today, six generations of the Krug family have perpetuated this dream.

Read on to discover the three pillars of our craftsmanship.

“At Krug, our philosophy is to harvest and isolate each plot, from which we obtain one wine that expresses its distinctive character and nuances. There is no hierarchy in our selection; no plot is favoured over another. We cultivate the differences and really search for unique characters, respecting this individuality until the blending decisions are made.”

INDIVIDUALITY

Individuality is the art of transforming the harvest of each plot of vines into its own wine, thus capturing the distinctive character of that vineyard.

This approach begins in the vineyards by tailoring viticulture decisions to each plot, and assessing the maturity of its berries through tastings to determine the optimal harvest date. Following the harvest, these berries are pressed and fermented separately, to obtain wines rich in contrast and different expressions. Only by appraising these individualities can Cellar Master Julie Cavil and the Tasting Committee fully appreciate the unique nuances of each, revealed through the climatic circumstances of the year.

The Art of

BLENDING

Julie Cavil with members of the Tasting Committee

From the beginning of the harvest, Cellar Master Julie Cavil and her team are already contemplating the impact of the year’s climatic circumstances on each individuality.

In the months following the harvest, they will assess the wines of the year, along with reserve wines of previous years. After recording around 5,000 tasting notes of 400 wines from more than 10 different years, it is time for her to practice the art of blending.

A Mastery of

PATIENCE

Each year, once the newest cuvées have been crafted, the bottles descend into Krug’s cellars. Over the course of years, they will develop in complexity and character.

When they are revealed, years later, the final composition will have gained in depth, elegance and generosity. All Krug champagnes will continue to gain in patina and complexity with the passage of time, the Maison’s constant ally.
