Krug Grande Cuvée 157ème Édition

Composed around the harvest of 2001

Krug Grande Cuvée is born from the dream of one man, Joseph Krug, to craft the very best Champagne he could offer, every single year, regardless of annual variations in climate. Since 1843, the House of Krug has honoured this vision with each new Édition of Krug Grande Cuvée: the most generous expression of Champagne.

Krug Grande Cuvée is re-created every year, beyond the notion of vintage and is a blend of over 120 individual wines from more than 10 different years. The fullness or flavours and aromas achieved by this careful art of blending would be impossible to express with the wines of a single year.

A talk with Julie Cavil

Krug Cellar Master

Krug Grande Cuvée is born from the dream of one man, Joseph Krug, to craft the very best Champagne he could offer, every single year, regardless of annual variations in climate. Each year, the House of Krug honours this dream with a new Édition of Krug Grande Cuvée: the most generous expression of Champagne.
Krug Grande Cuvée 157ème Édition was composed around the harvest of 2001. After a tempestuous winter, it was a year in which Krug's unique respect for the individual character of each plot and the careful following of their progress proved particularly crucial to ensuring a yield in good health and of ideal maturity.
The wines of the year from plots in Ambonnay, Oger, Avize, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Ay, Verzenay and Sainte-Gemme - villages which have long been dear to the House - brought structure and coherence to the blend. To complement these facets, a number of reserve wines from the House's extensive library were carefully selected, making up 29% of this Édition's blend.
A 1988 Chardonnay from Le Mesnil-sur-Oger brought freshness and vivacity while a 1999 Pinot Noir from Sainte-Gemme lent notes of succulent fruit. Finally a 1990 Pinot Noir from a plot in Ay brought the roundness and generosity so essential to every Édition of Krug Grande Cuvée.

Ratings

"Krug has always remained Krug. And Krug Grande Cuvée, edition after edition, remains an incredible palette of grape varieties, terroirs and different years with confounding harmony. None symbolises better than Krug Grande Cuvée this quest of perfection centered around the foundation itself of Champagne wine: blending."

Bettane & Desseauve 2015
RATING:  19/20

"This is all about balance and the integration of power and finesse, with finely honed acidity supporting flavors of quince paste, dried black cherry, spun honey and candied orange zest, while rich notes of roasted walnut, coffee liqueur and toasted cardamom resonate on the finish. Hard to stop sipping. Drink now through 2028."

Wine Spectator 2013
RATING:  97/100
