Krug Grande Cuvée
Krug Grande Cuvée is the archetype of Krug’s philosophy of craftsmanship and savoir faire: a blend of more than 120 wines from ten or more different years.
Its exceptional finesse is the result of a stay of at least another six years in the cellars. Over twenty years are needed to craft each bottle of Krug Grande Cuvée: the first prestige cuvee re-created each year, beyond the very notion of vintage.
This bottle left the Krug cellars to receive its cork in spring 2005.This is the last step after five years of ageing in the cellars to acquire finesse and elegance. This bottle is an extraordinary blend of 118 wines from 10 different years, the oldest from 1990 and the youngest from 2000. Every glass of this bottle of Krug Grande Cuvée is the fruit of more than 23 years of patience and crafting. The relatively mild winter with alternate dry and rainy periods was marked by a violent tornado, which struck in early winter, on 26 December 1999. A hail-free but rather rainy spring led to later budding than usual, but with sustained growth. Full bloom took place during the first fortnight of June 2000, and mildew appeared early that year. On 2nd July a hailstorm of almost unprecedented violence and extent fell on nearly 4,000 hectares, representing some 13% of the appellation’s total area. The hailstones, some the size of a pigeon's egg, partially or totally destroyed the Pinot Noir grape crops north of the Montagne de Reims. A milder summer ensued, but still with some storms, thus leading to the feeling and hope that there would be a good harvest. This year which ended being indulgent and balanced was combined with reserve wines which added richness, freshness and depth. The final composition of this Krug Grande Cuvée is: 45% Pinot Noir, 35% Chardonnay and 19% Meunier. Every year, we recreate from scratch the multitude of facets that do not compete on the palate, but instead form a perfect harmony, the main characteristic of Krug Grande Cuvée. Blending many years gives Krug Grande Cuvée its unique fullness of flavours and aromas, incredible generosity and an absolute elegance that are impossible to express with the wines of just a single year. Krug Grande Cuvée is re-created each year beyond the notion of vintage. Eric Lebel, Chef de Caves, Maison Krug
As you taste it, notes of toasted bread, hazelnut, nougat, barley sugar and jellied fruits may take you by surprise. You may even taste hints of apples still on the tree, flowers in bloom, ripe and dried fruit, almonds, marzipan, gingerbread, sweet spices and even brioche and honey.
You may also notice its exceptional freshness in the mouth, with rich and tangy flavours of lemon and grapefruit enhanced by the subtlety of its fine and elegant bubbles. Krug Grande Cuvée can age beautifully.
Storing & serving
The richness of your Krug Champagne is fully revealed between 9°C and 12°C (49°F - 54°F).
Serving your bottle too cold would refrain the aromas’expression.
Krug has created The Joseph, a unique crystal glass whose shape enables the bubbles to reach their optimal expression and allows the discovery of the incredible bouquet of aromas.
If you do not have The Joseph glass, you may prefer a white Burgundy glass to a flute, to enable the expression of Krug Champagne’s flavors and aromas.
As a Prestige Cuvée, Krug Champagnes age beautifully, the time revealing their richness and elegance.
Your Champagne should be stored in a wine cellar, or in a cool (between 10 to 15 °C - 50 to 59 °F) dry and away from light place, the exact conditions of Krug cellars.
Over twenty years go into creating each bottle of Krug Grande Cuvee,
to pair it with black truffle is to create a union of the best of Nature’s offering.
Simply the smell of fresh, delicate truffle is enough to evoke the fresh scents
of autumn fruit in Krug Grande Cuvee; they can be combined in any way,
no matter how simple, the experience is unforgettable.
The simple artichoke, which appears so fleetingly
throughout the culinary calendar, makes a harmonious
partner for Krug Grande Cuvee.
Pureed it is aromatic and velvety,
reflecting the subtle hazelnut notes of Krug Grande Cuvee.
As the nights draw in, the evocative warmth of toasted chestnuts is irresistible.
Smokey, crunchy and yet soft, chestnuts enhance the wines
which compose Krug Grande Cuvee which can reach up to 15 years of age.
A simple association, together they achieve sublime refined elegance.
The explosion of aromas and flavours exemplified by the full generosity
of Krug Grande Cuvee is echoed by the pastry-like crumbling crunch
of aged Parmesan, which then dissolves to cream in the mouth.
Thus their harmony is revealed, the Parmesan lifts the aroma of dried fruit
and freshly-cracked almonds in the Krug Grande Cuvee,
in turn giving mellow depth to the cheese. Exquisite and deliciously simple.
"Rich, with smoky hints of roasted almond and toasted brioche, this crystalline Champagne offers a finely detailed mousse that carries the firm, citrusy acidity and flavors of patisserie apple, spun honey and tangy black cherry, accented by subtle, aromatic hints of ground cumin and clove, bergamot and chamomile." – AN

"The Wines of our twenty years"
"Krug has always remained Krug. And Krug Grande Cuvée, in edition after edition, remains an incredible palette of grape varieties, terroirs and different years with confounding harmony. None symbolises better than Krug Grande Cuvée this quest of perfection centered around the foundation itself of Champagne wine: blending."

"In pairing Liquid Spirit to the experience of tasting Krug Grande Cuvée it heightened the emotion of both the music and the experience of drinking Champagne.
This is Liquid Spirit here, this is the energy. The bullience, the pleasure, in a way explosion of emotions that i am speaking of Liquid Spirit are contained in a bottle of Krug Grande Cuvée."
