Krug Grande Cuvée 166ème Édition

Composed around the harvest of 2010

Krug Grande Cuvée is born from the dream of one man, Joseph Krug, to craft the very best Champagne he could offer, every single year, regardless of annual variations in climate. Since 1843, the House of Krug has honoured this vision with each new Édition of Krug Grande Cuvée: the most generous expression of Champagne.

Krug Grande Cuvée is re-created every year, beyond the notion of vintage and is a blend of over 120 individual wines from more than 10 different years. The fullness or flavours and aromas achieved by this careful art of blending would be impossible to express with the wines of a single year.

This bottle spent at least 7 years in Krug's cellars developing its particular expression and elegance, receiving its cork in winter 2016 - 2017.

Krug Grande Cuvée is born from the dream of one man, Joseph Krug, to craft the very best Champagne he could offer, every single year, regardless of annual variations in climate. Each year, the House of Krug honours this dream with a new Édition of Krug Grande Cuvée: the most generous expression of Champagne.
Krug Grande Cuvée 166ème Édition was composed around the harvest of 2010. A year defined by its tumultuous climate, the grapes nonetheless showed great promise until the cool end to the growing season brought cause for concern. The careful attention given to the vines during this challenging period and Krug's unique respect for the individual character of each plot proved crucial to ensuring a yield in good health and of ideal maturity.
Unusually, the Chardonnay wines from the Côte de Blancs region did not reveal their habitual freshness, but the House's non-conformist approach to Champagne creation led us to counterbalance this with the vivacity of the year's Meunier wines, such as those from Sainte-Gemme and Courmas.
A selection of carefully chosen, relatively young reserve wines makes up 42% of the composition, most notable among them those from the year 2000 for their remarkable structure and those from Oger for their generous roundness. The 2006 wines from Verzy and Bouzy added the final touch to the blend, imparting to it the harmony so essential to the creation of every Édition of Krug Grande Cuvée.

RATINGS

"Krug has always remained Krug. And Krug Grande Cuvée, edition after edition, remains an incredible palette of grape varieties, terroirs and different years with confounding harmony. None symbolises better than Krug Grande Cuvée this quest of perfection centered around the foundation itself of Champagne wine: blending."

"This is all about balance and the integration of power and finesse, with finely honed acidity supporting flavors of quince paste, dried black cherry, spun honey and candied orange zest, while rich notes of roasted walnut, coffee liqueur and toasted cardamom resonate on the finish. Hard to stop sipping. Drink now through 2028."

I still remember my first glass of Krug, being overwhelmed by a complexity I did not expect from a Champagne. It was one big crescendo, a feast of highlights, the big finale of a huge fireworks display.

STORING & SERVING

The Right Temperature

The House recommends that its Champagnes are served between 9°C and 12°C, as colder temperatures limit the expression of their flavours and aromas.

The Right Glass

The House of Krug has partnered with renowned crystal maker Riedel to design a glass that would most generously reveal the fullness of flavour and aromas of Krug Champagnes.
