Krug Clos du Mesnil 2000

The purity of a single plot of Chardonnay in 2000

Krug Clos du Mesnil 2000 exalts the crisp purity of Chardonnay from one of the finest terroirs in the region – a single walled plot of vines, Clos du Mesnil – from a single year, 2000.

The legendary vineyard has been protected by stone walls since 1698 and is hidden within the heart of one of the most celebrated villages for Chardonnay in the Champagne region, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. Its privileged location and small size of 1.84 hectares (4.25 acres), make Krug Clos du Mesnil 2000 a rare gem.

This individually numbered bottle spent at least 11 years in Krug's cellars further developing its depth and complexity. After regular tasting and appraisal, it received its cork as Krug Clos du Mesnil 2000 in winter 2010 - 2011.

A talk with Julie Cavil

Krug Cellar Master

Before the harvest of 2000, a hailstorm devastated a large part of the village but, situated within its heart, Krug’s Clos du Mesnil resisted better than the other plots, as its vines are protected by the surrounding walls and village. Delicious, generous, ripe grapes survived the storm to provide an opulent and infinitely elegant Chardonnay.

The House of Krug chooses to create Krug Clos du Mesnil only in years that provide the ideal conditions for the full potential of this enclosed plot of Chardonnay vines to be revealed.
Krug Clos du Mesnil 2000 reveals a precise signature and a striking grace, after resting in the cellar for over ten years.

Tasting notes

Krug Clos du Mesnil 2000 has tones of luminous, very light gold with hints of green.
On the nose, seductive aromas of ripe apple, toffee, barley sugar, short crust pastry, raisins, honey, acacia and citrus fruits. On the palate you will find indulgent flavours of peaches and white blossoms, gingerbread, honey and orange zest.

Ratings

"Silky and fine like featherweight cashmere, this vibrant blanc de blanc is nonetheless laden with ample, expressive flavors. Rich hints of XO cognac and coffee liqueur underscore bergamot and glazed apricot fruit, while smoky minerality, spun honey, grilled nut and exotic spices impart further complexity and linger on the lasting finish."

Wine Spectator 2015

"A blend of chalk and french butter, slightly lemony, with a salinity that splendidly supports the whole, a complete success."

I still remember my first glass of Krug, being overwhelmed by a complexity I did not expect from a Champagne. It was one big crescendo, a feast of highlights, the big finale of a huge fireworks display.
