This bottle received its cork in the autumn of 2015. This is the last step after over 13 years of ageing in Krug’s cellars gaining finesse and elegance. An additional year of rest before leaving the House completed the harmony and beauty of this bottle of Krug 2002.
Krug 2002 was created to be different, to be the expression of the year 2002 with its distinct character as captured by Krug. Krug 2002 reveals the music of the year 2002 as perceived by Krug; there are as many compositions as there are Krug Vintages.
I did not hesitate to create Krug 2002, named Ode to Nature in the House as it expresses an extremely serene and generous year, centered on fruit of all types, with beautiful structure, intensity and elegance.
Krug 2002 is the result of a clement and generous climate, consistently warm and relatively dry, granting the ideal conditions for grape maturation. The harvest started on September 14th and, as the grapes arrived at the press, they were in excellent and robust health.
The 2002 harvest for Krug was marked by great homogeneity and superb balance between maturity and freshness, very much in line with our standards. Wines were round and bold, very attractive and structured; aromatic, delicate and very long. Persistence on the palate was identified in most wines from the very first tasting sessions. All wines were straight and intense, and then, what was astonishing, was the generosity of each tasting. Every single wine seemed to be itself the result of the art of blending.
The year 2002 is a tribute to fruit of all types: citrus, tropical, white, yellow and red, fresh or jammy, they were all intensely present and sometimes they could almost all be found in just one wine; a very good expression of each plot from Saint Gemme, Villevenard and Coulommes. Some of our historical plots from Mesnil sur Oger, d'Oger, Avize, Trépail and Villers Marmery added some spice, such as acacia and pepper, to all the sublime fruit, bringing finesse and elegance. Ambonnay, Bouzy, d'Ay and Mareuil-sur-Ay provided great structure.
Fruit, intensity and generosity are all common denominators in the tasting notes of the base wines of this year. Very strong and well-defined characters were all sources of inspiration to express the circumstances of 2002.
The final creation is a balanced dialogue between the Pinot Noir (40%) and Chardonnay grapes (39%), with 21% of Meunier providing the final and decidedly Krug touch.
A very charismatic fresh nose, promise of natural intensity and elegance with strong presence of fruits, fruits of all types. A diverse bouquet of orange aromas with some notes of liquorice and light chocolate biscuit can be enjoyed.
On the palate, astonishing, balanced and delicate with significant fresh, tropical, wild and crystalised fruits. It is a hymn to fruit: red, white and citrus fruit with notes of cassis, chocolate, candied-orange peel, cocoa beans, honey with hints of smoke and toast enhanced by a vibrant, persistent long finish.
Recipes like duck breast with its juice in reduction, roasted butternut squash and kumquat chutney or a lentil curry stew marked with orange zest can pair deliciously with Krug 2002. As a dessert, an orange tiramisu or a cinammon brioche with a carrot, ginger and lemon mousse would also combine beautifully.
" It is chock-full of acidity and life, is really muscular and (...) intellectual. (...) There is nothing in excess; a great example of the Krug art of assemblage. Very solid and concentrated but not heavy at all."
"To me, Symphony No.6, Tchaikovsky's 3rd movement, summons up the triumph of nature itself with its flamboyant, colorful orchestration: a kind of certitude, a tribute to creative genius. The pinnacle of expression."
Pierre MonteuxJean Philippe Collard - Pierre Monteux_Tchaïkowsky Symphonie n°6, 3° mouvement
