Krug Rosé 19ème Édition

Composed around the harvest of 2006

Krug Rosé is inspired by the dream of the fifth generation of the Krug family to conceive a rosé Champagne that did not yet exist, one that could be re-created each year. Every Édition of Krug Rosé perpetuates this legacy.

Krug Rosé is surprising, as it replaces a good red wine at the table with brio. This Champagne is a delicate blend of wines of the year with wines from selected plots of the House’s vast reserve library, completed with traditionally macerated Pinot Noir to add structure and spice. A rest of around seven years in Krug’s cellars gives Krug Rosé its refined elegance and character.

A talk with Julie Cavil

Krug Cellar Master

Inspired by the dream of the fifth generation of the House of Krug to conceive a rosé Champagne that did not yet exist, every year a new Édition of Krug Rosé is created.
Krug Rosé 19ème Édition was composed around the harvest of 2006. The year's summer was one of sharp contrasts, with a heat wave punctuated by intermittent storms and even hail. These extremes incited some concern for the health of the grapes but the last days of summer were fine and bright. When harvest time arrived, the grapes expressed a good level of maturity.
To balance the beautiful roundness and aromatic notes of fruit in the selected wines of the year, the majority of Pinot Noirs chosen for the blend came from plots on the northern slopes of the Montagne de Reims, bringing hints of fresh fruit and tension. Among the reserve wines, which make up 22% of the final blend, a 2004 Chardonnay from a plot in Oger was chosen for its vivacious notes of fruit, while a 2005 Meunier from a plot in the Vallée de la Marne lent its generous fruit character. Finally, a red wine from the House's plot in Ay imparted an enchanting colour, delicacy, length and spiciness. This fusion promised to reveal the elegance and verve so characteristic of every Édition of Krug Rosé.
Krug Rosé is the most non-conformist of Krug Champagnes, for bold gastronomic adventures. Combining breadth, depth and grace, it dances a perfect tango with savoury dishes of all kinds, replacing a good red wine at the table with brio.

Ratings

"The silky texture of this vivid Rosé Champagne draped the palate, offering an aromatic panoply of flavors, from pure raspberry and white peach fruit to ground cumin and anise, violet, graphite, spun honey and toasted almond. Delivers a long, mouthwatering finish."

Wine Spectator 2015
RATING:  95/100

"A Rosé which never plays with a flattering and primary character but enhances the depth and the finesse of a grand cru, with an infinite persistence."

Bettane & Desseauve 2015
RATING:  19/20

Tasting notes

At first sight, its subtle pale pink colour holds a promise of elegance.
On the nose, aromas of rose hips, cured ham, mulberries, redcurrant, peony, pepper and pink grapefruit.
On the palate, delicate flavours of honey, citrus and dried fruit with a long finish, enhanced by its fine bubbles complete the experience.

Food Pairing

Krug Rosé lends itself to pairing ideas outside the box. For example, when it accompanies very good quality anchovies, a magical encounter occurs. The saltiness of the fish sublimes the fruit aromas and silkiness of the Champagne, turning the anchovies into a velvet sensation. Krug Rosé can also be enjoyed with foie gras, lamb, game, white meat, venison or even dishes with spices. Krug Rosé is not recommended for desserts, unless they are not sweet at all. Unexpectedly, it best accompanies very savoury dishes.

STORING AND SERVING

The Right Temperature

The House of Krug recommends that its Champagnes be served between 9°C and 12°C, as colder temperatures limit the expression of their flavours and aromas.

The Right Glass

To design a glass that would allow Krug Rosé’s singularly elegant and nonconformist character to be fully discovered, the House of Krug joined forces, once more, with master glassmaker Riedel.

The Influence of Time

Krug offers only prestige Champagnes, the most important characteristic of which is that they will gain beautifully with the passage of time.
