Krug Grande Cuvée
Ultimate generosity

Krug Grande Cuvée is the archetype of Krug’s philosophy of craftsmanship and savoir faire: a blend of more than 120 wines from ten or more different years.
Its exceptional finesse is the result of a stay of at least another six years in the cellars. Over twenty years are needed to craft each bottle of Krug Grande Cuvée: the first prestige cuvee re-created each year, beyond the very notion of vintage.

“Every year, we create anew the multitude of facets that form each Édition of Krug Grande Cuvée. With its myriad flavours and aromas, everyone can find something in it that stirs their emotions.”

This bottle spent at least 9 years in Krug’s cellars developing its particular expression and elegance, receiving its cork in Winter 2016.

Every year since the foundation of the House of Krug, a new Édition of Krug Grande Cuvée is created to offer the fullest expression of Champagne.
This bottle belongs to the 163ème Édition, a blend of 183 wines from 12 different years. The youngest dates back to 2007 and the oldest to 1990. Every glass poured from it is the fruit of more than 20 years of patience and careful craftsmanship.
Krug Grande Cuvée 163ème Édition was composed around the harvest of 2007. A year that defied all possible predictions, the extremes of 2007 pushed us to rethink everything we thought we knew. We had to challenge ourselves, to look with fresh eyes at what each individual plot of vines could give us. The early harvest revealed grapes with powerful aromas and discreet flavours.

Krug’s unique respect for the individual character of each plot enabled the House to discern the strong potential of a number of lesser-known plots to enhance the blend while wines from plots in Villers, Trépail, Mareuil and Ambonnay proved to be the foremost contributors to this singular creation. As a result, the wines of the year shine through, making up 73% of the final blend, which is quite a unique composition in the history of the House as the three principal Champagne grape varieties are present in almost equal parts. A select number of carefully chosen reserve wines from 11 previous years ensure the breadth, depth, roundness, finesse and elegance so essential to every Édition of Krug Grande Cuvée.

The final composition of this bottle of Krug Grande Cuvée is 37% Pinot Noir, 32% Chardonnay and 31% Meunier.
Krug Grande Cuvée is born from the dream of one man, Joseph Krug, to offer the very best Champagne every single year, regardless of annual variations in climate. Each year, the House of Krug honours this dream with a new Édition of Krug Grande Cuvée: the fullest expression of Champagne.

Tasting notes

As you taste it, notes of toasted bread, hazelnut, nougat, barley sugar and jellied fruits may take you by surprise. You may even taste hints of apples still on the tree, flowers in bloom, ripe and dried fruit, almonds, marzipan, gingerbread, sweet spices and even brioche and honey.

You may also notice its exceptional freshness in the mouth, with rich and tangy flavours of lemon and grapefruit enhanced by the subtlety of its fine and elegant bubbles. Krug Grande Cuvée can age beautifully.

Storing & serving

  • Krug Grande Cuvée | 1
The richness of your Krug Champagne is fully revealed between 9°C and 12°C (49°F - 54°F). Serving your bottle too cold would refrain the aromas’expression.
  • Krug Grande Cuvée | 2
Krug has created The Joseph, a unique crystal glass whose shape enables the bubbles to reach their optimal expression and allows the discovery of the incredible bouquet of aromas.
  • Krug Grande Cuvée | 3
If you do not have The Joseph glass, you may prefer a white Burgundy glass to a flute, to enable the expression of Krug Champagne’s flavors and aromas.
  • Krug Grande Cuvée | 4
As a Prestige Cuvée, Krug Champagnes age beautifully, the time revealing their richness and elegance.
  • Krug Grande Cuvée | 5
Your Champagne should be stored in a wine cellar, or in a cool (between 10 to 15 °C - 50 to 59 °F) dry and away from light place, the exact conditions of Krug cellars.

"The Wines of our twenty years"

"Krug has always remained Krug. And Krug Grande Cuvée, in edition after edition, remains an incredible palette of grape varieties, terroirs and different years with confounding harmony. None symbolises better than Krug Grande Cuvée this quest of perfection centered around the foundation itself of Champagne wine: blending."

Bettane & Desseauve 2015

“This is all about balance and the integration of power and finesse, with finely honed acidity supporting flavors of quince paste, dried black cherry, spun honey and candied orange zest, while rich notes of roasted walnut, coffee liqueur and toasted cardamom resonate on the finish. Hard to stop sipping. Drink now through 2028. ”–AN

For Krug Grande Cuvée, I have chosen Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto. It is one of the most generous masterpieces, full of joy, full of greatness, with a kind of majestic presence. I think it goes beautifully with the open spirit and generous fullness of Krug Grande Cuvée.
