This bottle spent at least 20 years in Krug's cellars, receiving its cork in autumn 2007. Composed of a selection of the year's most characterful wines, Krug 1996 is the expression of the year 1996 revealed by Krug.

Winter's swan song came with a spell of heavy frosts in February of 1996 and the sunny, dry spring that followed marked the start of an idyllic growing season. In September, the region was blessed with warm and dry days and cool nights - the perfect conditions for the harvest, which began at just the right moment. The grapes surpassed all expectations, balancing beautiful maturity with remarkable freshness.

The promise of the year was clear, but we still had to wait and see what the wines of the year would reveal, for at Krug no decision is made before tasting has taken place. At first, the wines were so outstandingly fresh that they were almost a challenge to compose, but it soon became clear that in time, the right blend would tell a captivating story.

Today, 20 years later, Krug 1996 still seems to be in the bloom of its youth, at times like a wild horse, rearing between roundness and bursts of liveliness. Over the years it will continue to reveal enticing new facets.

The final composition of this bottle of Krug 1996 is 48% Pinot Noir, 31% Chardonnay and 21% Meunier.

At the House of Krug every Vintage is crafted to be different, celebrating the distinct character of a particular year. It is as if Krug 1996 were the music of the year, captured by Krug.

Tasting notes

Krug 1996, with radiant, rich gold colour and resplendent bubbles, first caresses the sense with its rich mature aromas before exploding in a bouquet of freshness; it elevates contrast and character to unprecedented extremes. With firm texture, its full, ripe flavours are followed by fresh pear, candied lemon, ripe summer fruit, honey, gingerbread and hints of delicate mocha.

    The richness of your Krug Champagne is fully revealed between 9°C and 12°C (49°F - 54°F). Serving your bottle too cold would refrain the aromas’expression.

    Krug has created The Joseph, a unique crystal glass whose shape enables the bubbles to reach their optimal expression and allows the discovery of the incredible bouquet of aromas.

    If you do not have The Joseph glass, you may prefer a white Burgundy glass to a flute, to enable the expression of Krug Champagne’s flavors and aromas.
