Krug Rosé 18ème Édition

Composed around the harvest of 2005

Krug Rosé is inspired by the dream of the fifth generation of the Krug family to conceive a rosé Champagne that did not yet exist, one that could be re-created each year. Every Édition of Krug Rosé perpetuates this legacy.

Krug Rosé is surprising, as it replaces a good red wine at the table with brio. This Champagne is a delicate blend of wines of the year with wines from selected plots of the House’s vast reserve library, completed with traditionally macerated Pinot Noir to add structure and spice. A rest of around seven years in Krug’s cellars gives Krug Rosé its refined elegance and character.

A talk with Julie Cavil

Krug Cellar Master

Inspired by the dream of the fifth generation of the House of Krug to conceive a rosé Champagne that did not yet exist, every year a new Édition of Krug Rosé is created.
Krug Rosé 18ème Édition was composed around the harvest of 2005. It was a year of patience and diligence in which a mild winter was followed by a hot, overcast summer. While the harvest in Champagne officially began on 12th September, every decision at Krug is based on tasting and so the House chose to wait a further week before beginning picking, when the grapes offered their optimal level of expression. The generous yield revealed an exceptional level of freshness.
Upon tasting, the wines of the year - which made up 80% of the final blend - revealed a vibrant character. Especially notable were the Chardonnays from plots in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger for their remarkable notes of fruit and the Pinot Noirs from plots in Mareuil-sur-Ay and Les Riceys for their structure. To complement the different expressions of fruit in the wines of the year, a number of wines were selected from Krug's extensive library of reserve wines. Among them, wines from the year from plots in Ambonnay and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger on the southern slopes of the Montagne de Reims brought their indulgent fruit character. Finally, a red wine from the House's plot in Ay imparted an enchanting colour, generosity, length and spiciness. This fusion promised to reveal the elegance and verve so characteristic of every Édition of Krug Rosé.
Krug Rosé is the most non-conformist of Krug Champagnes, for bold gastronomic adventures. Combining breadth, depth and grace, it dances a perfect tango with savoury dishes of all kinds, replacing a good red wine at the table with brio.

Ratings

"The silky texture of this vivid Rosé Champagne draped the palate, offering an aromatic panoply of flavors, from pure raspberry and white peach fruit to ground cumin and anise, violet, graphite, spun honey and toasted almond. Delivers a long, mouthwatering finish."

Wine Spectator 2015

"A Rosé which never plays with a flattering and primary character but enhances the depth and the finesse of a grand cru, with an infinite persistence."
