Krug Grande Cuvée 162ème Édition

Composed around the harvest of 2006

Krug Grande Cuvée is born from the dream of one man, Joseph Krug, to craft the very best Champagne he could offer, every single year, regardless of annual variations in climate. Since 1843, the House of Krug has honoured this vision with each new Édition of Krug Grande Cuvée: the most generous expression of Champagne.

Krug Grande Cuvée is re-created every year, beyond the notion of vintage and is a blend of over 120 individual wines from more than 10 different years. The fullness or flavours and aromas achieved by this careful art of blending would be impossible to express with the wines of a single year.

Krug Cellar Master

Krug Grande Cuvée is born from the dream of one man, Joseph Krug, to craft the very best Champagne he could offer, every single year, regardless of annual variations in climate. Each year, the House of Krug honours this dream with a new Édition of Krug Grande Cuvée: the most generous expression of Champagne.
Krug Grande Cuvée 162ème Édition was composed around the harvest of 2006. The year's summer was defined by sharp contrasts with a heatwave punctuated by storms and even hail. But the end of the season was fine and bright and when the harvest began, the grapes expressed a good level of maturity.
Among the wines of the year, the Meuniers particularly stood out, while the Chardonnays did not show their usual level of expression. But as with every Édition of Krug Grande Cuvée, the House was able to draw on its extensive library of reserve wines to complement the wines of the year and give the Champagne its distinctive fullness of flavours and aromas.
A carefully chosen selection of these reserve wines, including a generous 1990 Chardonnay from Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, as well as many others predominantly from the first five years of the millennium made up 40% of the blend. This palette of wines from previous years brought the freshness and vivacity so essential to every Édition of Krug Grande Cuvée.

Ratings

"There is an intriguing interplay between the character of an aged Champagne on the nose and youthful, upright vigour and energy on the palate. The finish has remarkable delicacy and purity, as well the lingering echo of its subtle salty tang. This is a Champagne already at its apogee, but one that retains real potential for ageing."
