Krug Collection 1990

Time’s second revelation of Krug 1990

To the delight of collectors around the world, a very limited number of bottles of Krug Vintage are kept in ideal conditions in the House’s cellars. They are tasted and appraised as they wait to blossom into a second life. Krug Vintage then becomes Krug Collection and reveals a new personality. Krug Collection Champagnes are true examples of time sublimation; maturity exposes hidden facets and depth. New flavours surprise, while old ones have gained structure. Krug Collection is always a wonderful discovery, a deeper story of the Krug Vintage. Krug Collection 1990 is time’s second revelation of Krug 1990.

This individually numbered magnum spent at least 25 years in Krug's cellars further developing its depth and complexity. After regular tasting and appraisal, it received its cork as Krug Collection 1990 in spring 2015.

As it is a magnum, we let it rest for even longer, waiting until the Champagne is ready to be enjoyed.

The year 1990 was classically contrasted in Champagne climate with a particularly mild and snowless winter followed by sharp frosts in early April and a spell of lighter frosts later in the month. June, though cool at times, brought favourable conditions, which heralded a hot, sunny summer. The wines of the year were rich and balanced with great structure.
To express the character of 1990, this Champagne is a blend of intense Pinot Noir (40%), elegant and round Chardonnay (37%) and very fresh Meunier (23%).
Krug Collection 1990 is the second life of Krug 1990. Now, over 25 years after its creation, Krug Collection 1990 beams with astonishing youth and exuberance. It is a blend of wines with fruit, great structure, elegance and distinction.
Krug Collection 1990 is part of the House of Krug’s unique trilogy of three exceptional years (1988, 1989, 1990) with completely different climates that resulted in Champagnes that are unique.
The Krug Collection bottles are numbered and leave the House in descending order, thereby revealing how many of these precious Champagnes still remain. They are guaranteed by Krug with a certificate of authenticity signed by Olivier Krug, which can be provided upon request.

Tasting notes

At first sight, a deep golden tone hints to both the sunshine and generosity of the year.
On the nose, indulgent notes of plum tart, cinnamon, crème pâtissière and gingerbread.
On the palate, opulence and creaminess combined with an amazing freshness, a lively festival of flavours: spices, brioche, candied, caramelized, citrus and dried fruit as well as notes of apricot, grapefruit, orange marmalade and lemon pie with lightly toasted nuts and a drizzle of fine liquid honey. Its extraordinary length enhances the tasting experience.

I still remember my first glass of Krug, being overwhelmed by a complexity I did not expect from a Champagne. It was one big crescendo, a feast of highlights, the big finale of a huge fireworks display.

FOOD PAIRING

Krug Collection 1990’s elegant and silky character make it a delightful companion to morel mushroom risotto, duck with caramelised turnips or boudin blanc with truffles. For dessert, it pairs beautifully with a gingerbread and orange tiramisu, baked apples topped with toasted almond slivers or even aged Comté simply sliced.

STORING & SERVING

The Right Temperature

The House recommends that its Champagnes are served between 9°C and 12°C, as colder temperatures limit the expression of their flavours and aromas.

The Right Glass

The House of Krug has partnered with renowned crystal maker Riedel to design a glass that would most generously reveal the fullness of flavour and aromas of Krug Champagnes.
