Krug Grande Cuvée is born from the dream of one man, Joseph Krug, to craft the very best Champagne he could offer, every single year, regardless of annual variations in climate. Since 1843, the House of Krug has honoured this vision with each new Édition of Krug Grande Cuvée: the most generous expression of Champagne.

Krug Grande Cuvée is re-created every year, beyond the notion of vintage and is a blend of over 120 individual wines from more than 10 different years. The fullness or flavours and aromas achieved by this careful art of blending would be impossible to express with the wines of a single year.

A talk with Julie Cavil

Krug Cellar Master

Krug Grande Cuvée is born from the dream of one man, Joseph Krug, to craft the very best Champagne he could offer, every single year, regardless of annual variations in climate. Each year, the House of Krug honours this dream with a new Édition of Krug Grande Cuvée: the most generous expression of Champagne.
Krug Grande Cuvée 165ème Édition was composed around the harvest of 2009. After a frosty start of the year, the wonderfully mild spring offered an auspicious beginning to the growing season. From late summer onwards, the vines basked in warm and dry conditions and the grapes ripened beautifully. When the harvest began, they were in excellent health and showed a perfect level of maturity.
From the first tastings, the wines of the year showed remarkable balance. Vibrant Chardonnays from plots in Avize, Oger, Villers Marmery, Trépail, elegant Pinot Noirs from plots in Verzy, Ambonnay and Ay as well as radiant Meuniers from plots in Sainte-Gemme and Bassuet all brought their unique character to the blend.
To complement the wines of the year and imbue this Édition with Krug Grande Cuvée's distinctive fullness of flavours and aromas, the House drew on its extensive library of reserve wines, of which a careful selection made up 31% of the final blend. Predominant among them are Pinot Noir wines from plots on the southern side of the Montagne de Reims. These bring the expression and structure so essential to every Édition of Krug Grande Cuvée.

Ratings

"The Krug Grande Cuvée 165ème Édition is showing well, offering up a lovely bouquet of warm bread, honeycomb, peachy fruit, smoke and lemon oil. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, layered and beautifully integrated, with excellent depth at the core, a fine mousse and a long, chalky finish. Built around the 2009 vintage, the 165ème isn't as powerful or fleshy as the 167ème Édition, but if anything, it's even classier and more harmonious at this stage.”
