Les Petites Canailles, nestled in downtown Paso Robles, brings a contemporary French bistro experience to California’s Central Coast. Inspired by Chef Asseo’s dual heritage, the restaurant highlights local produce through classic technique. A warm, modern space with a focus on hospitality, it reflects the values of craftsmanship, seasonality, and culinary heritage. 

About the Krug Lover

Chef Julien Asseo was born in Libourne, France, and raised in Paso Robles, where he now blends his French roots with California’s seasonal bounty. His cuisine is refined yet approachable, rooted in tradition and guided by local ingredients. Les Petites Canailles opened in 2019 and quickly gained acclaim.

How would you define your cooking style?

We take classic French fine dining and make it more accessible with a fresh twist. 

Who is the person you admire most and why?

My parents. I was lucky enough to be born into a family of winemakers, so I've been passionate since a young age. If you're searching for the perfect bottle, I always suggest exploring the "family" section of the wine list, which features a curation inspired by my loved ones' favorite choices. 

What is the most inspiring experience you had on your journey to becoming a chef?

Finding a space that felt like home was a pivotal moment for us. The instant my wife and I stepped inside, we knew it was our place. Now, we make it our mission to ensure that every diner who comes through these doors feels like a personal guest in our home, experiencing the same warmth and comfort that we felt from the very beginning. 

How does the location of your restaurant inspire your cooking?

Paso Robles has always been famous for its wine, and while it did not really need more attention, it is very rewarding to see it getting noticed for its food now too. 

If you could prepare a dinner for any four guests, who would they be?

My wife and our three "little rascals" or "petites canailles" as you say in french. 

Can you describe your first sip of Krug?

I had the great fortune of being born into a family of winemakers, who always wanted to share their favorites. I have been a Krug Lover since before I can even remember. 

When is your favorite time to enjoy Krug?

I dream of the day my kids are old enough for me to give them their first taste of Krug Grande Cuvée. It will be my proudest day when I can pass my love for champagne on to my kids.
