About the Krug Lover
Chef Su Kim Hock is celebrated for his unwavering dedication to culinary excellence and his profound influence on Penang’s gastronomic scene. His journey began humbly, with a hotel management degree from the UK, where he later discovered his passion for the culinary arts. Guided by renowned mentors and enriched by experiences in prestigious establishments, Chef Kim Hock honed his craft, and his time abroad sharpened his skills and solidified his reputation. Eventually, the call of home and a desire for his son to grow up rooted in Penang’s culture brought Chef Kim Hock back to Malaysia.

What are your sources of inspiration?
My sources of inspiration come from a combination of place, culture, and upbringing. My training in European countries taught me to respect the ingredients and the craft of cooking with precision. At the same time, being raised in a half-Teochew, half-Peranakan family has deepened my respect for cultural traditions and the stories behind food. These influences have shaped the way I approach cooking, blending techniques and values from both worlds.
What is the greatest lesson you have learnt in or outside the kitchen?
The importance of patience, humility, and teamwork. Patience is vital because great achievements take time, whether it’s mastering a skill, perfecting a dish, or building a career. It allows for precision, creativity, and growth, avoiding mistakes that come from rushing. Humility keeps me grounded and open to learning, reminding me that no matter my experience, there’s always more to discover. Teamwork is equally essential, as every role in the kitchen contributes to a shared vision. Trust, communication, and respect within a team are what make success possible, transforming challenges into opportunities and ideas into reality.
How has the way you cook evolved as your career has progressed?
As my career has progressed, my approach to cooking has become more focused on respecting the ingredients and their natural qualities. I have learnt to value the terroir and purpose behind each ingredient, understanding how it contributes to the overall dish. Over time, I have simplified my cooking. It’s not about trying to impress others, but about creating something that truly reflects my beliefs and allows the ingredients to shine on their own.
How would you describe yourself in three words?
Ambitious, Fun, Creative.
What role does Music play in your life?
Music has always been an important part of my life. After a long, busy service, it helps me unwind and find calm. In the mornings, it energises me and gets me ready for the day ahead. Music soothes, uplifts, and keeps me grounded.
When is your favourite time to enjoy Krug?
Although I have access to Krug almost every day during service, it remains something special that I like to enjoy during major celebrations. For me, Krug is about creating memories; it is part of the experience of cherishing life’s milestones.
Why do you love Krug?
I love Krug because of the values I share with the Maison and its community. Every bottle tells a story of craftsmanship and tradition, and connects people through shared moments of celebration and appreciation.
