Krug Grande Cuvée is born from the dream of one man, Joseph Krug, to craft the very best Champagne he could offer, every single year, regardless of annual variations in climate. Since 1843, the House of Krug has honoured this vision with each new Édition of Krug Grande Cuvée: the most generous expression of Champagne.

Krug Grande Cuvée is re-created every year, beyond the notion of vintage and is a blend of over 120 individual wines from more than 10 different years. The fullness or flavours and aromas achieved by this careful art of blending would be impossible to express with the wines of a single year.

A talk with Julie Cavil

Krug Cellar Master

Krug Grande Cuvée is born from the dream of one man, Joseph Krug, to craft the very best Champagne he could offer, every single year, regardless of annual variations in climate. Each year, the House of Krug honours this dream with a new Édition of Krug Grande Cuvée: the most generous expression of Champagne.
Krug Grande Cuvée 156ème Édition was composed around the harvest of 2000. A violent tornado in December 1999, spring rains and a brutal hailstorm in midsummer made for a particularly challenging year. Thankfully the last few weeks of summer were generally bright and mild. The first grapes were gathered on 11th September and the two-week-long harvest gave us a bountiful yield of large grapes with intense flavour.
The Chardonnays of the year revealed a balance of character between the liveliness of wines from Avize, the roundness of those from Villers-Marmery and the crispness of Trépail. The Meuniers from plots in Sainte-Gemme and Villevenard showed their distinctive vibrancy. Pinot Noirs from the north side of the Montagne de Reims revealed a delightful freshness.
To complement these facets, a selection of wines from the House of Krug's extensive library of reserve wines was chosen, making up 34% of the final blend. A 1990 Pinot Noir from Ay lent structure to the composition, while a 1996 from Ambonnay imparted the vivacity so essential to every Édition of Krug Grande Cuvée.

Ratings

"Krug has always remained Krug. And Krug Grande Cuvée, edition after edition, remains an incredible palette of grape varieties, terroirs and different years with confounding harmony. None symbolises better than Krug Grande Cuvée this quest of perfection centered around the foundation itself of Champagne wine: blending."

Bettane & Desseauve 2015
RATING:  19/20

"This is all about balance and the integration of power and finesse, with finely honed acidity supporting flavors of quince paste, dried black cherry, spun honey and candied orange zest, while rich notes of roasted walnut, coffee liqueur and toasted cardamom resonate on the finish. Hard to stop sipping. Drink now through 2028."

Wine Spectator 2013
RATING:  97/100
