Born in 1959, Iwao Furusawa studied violin under Ivry Gitlis in France. During his notable career, he has performed with jazz violin master Stephane Grappelli who only collaborated with three musicians from the classical world in his last album, the other two being Yehudi Menuhin and Yo-Yo Ma. One of the most exceptional instruments and a renowned Stradivarius, the “San Lorenzo 1718” has been permanently lent to him. Furusawa’s upcoming projects will include performing at the Corsica Music Festival in Japan in 2023.

A talk with Iwao Furusawa

Just like a Krug Champagne that ages in the cellars, my own performances are still ripening day by day.
Can you explain the pairings you have composed for each Krug Champagnes?
At the core of my inspiration are Krug’s philosophy, history, and craftsmanship, which I discovered directly from the House. To express the rarity and uniqueness of Krug Clos du Mesnil 2006, born from this tiny walled plot and a single grape variety, I decided to play a solo. Since Krug 2006 is an expression of grapes of a singular year, I decided to represent their flavors as musicians in a unique string ensemble. Krug Grande Cuvée 162ème Édition expresses the unlimited fantasy world as a full orchestra. Just as people grow through the course of their lives, each grape in its own life eventually becomes a wine. Music is not born in a day either. When I first touched the Stradivarius, nothing worked for me, but spending many years getting to know it, I was finally able to handle it and make it my own. Just like a Krug Champagne that ages in the cellars, my own performances are still ripening day by day.
What do you have to say about Krug x Music?
I think it is a wonderful concept that fits the House very well. Music is indispensable for Krug because opening a bottle of Krug is always a ceremony, even if it is not a special day. Furthermore, considering the sensations evoked by such a special creation that has been patiently waiting for many years, the idea seems natural to me. We all experience good times and challenges: one day you may laugh while you listen to a piece of music and the next, it might bring tears to your eyes. There is a broad spectrum of emotions that comes from listening to music and tasting Krug Champagne. I hope my Krug Echoes create in inviting environment that people will enjoy and discuss as they like.
How will you describe your artistic creation?
Music for me, is to express the things I feel in a song and I always have a reason to compose. This time, it was a straightforward idea to translate the splendid sensation I had in my mouth into song. I have composed and played the music in one way, but someone else might hear or play it differently, just as their tasting experience with Krug will be unique and personal. As a musician, I have gratitude and respect for Krug because it is a House built over a long history, similar to the way music has developed over time. Each year, Krug gives birth to a new Édition of Krug Grande Cuvée and it will inspire me to play.
