Born and raised in Mumbai, I bring over 7 years of experience in wine appreciation and took charge of The Oberoi Gurgaon as a Resident Sommelier in March ’15.
Wine was never a career goal, even as I worked my way through at various fine-dining restaurants, from single Michelin star Launceston Place up until Cinnamon Club run by Chef Vivek Singh.
A modern Indian restaurant were matching wine with Indian food was a complete no-no. I changed the mindsets of people as I follow a genuine enthusiasm for matching people to bottles and vice versa.
Although I knew next to nothing about the wine, my interest grew as I listened to people at tables with bottles, telling stories about the people who made them and the places they came from. 
Before joining The Oberoi, I opened the doors of Gordon Ramsay’s Classic Savoy Grill an iconic masterpiece in Savoy Hotel. It was a huge challenge going from nothing to creating a list; I think the most rewarding task is to simply create a balance.

A talk with Rakesh Awaghade

Wine is all about sensual experience, as a sommelier is to cater to that experience, assist it along, create it. This is completely human experience, not this intangible thing.
What are your sources of inspiration?
The opportunity to create something unique and innovate sometimes beyond your imagination and the curiosity in discovering and learning new things everyday.
What is your idea of pleasure?
When a tight wine finally opens up in a decanter, correctly identifying a wine in a blind tasting for the first time, taking a much needed wine break with a pour of scotch or a well made craft beer.
What is your ultimate dream meal?
My ultimate dream meal would be home-cooked food using local ingredients from farmers market. You can buy great food in an upscale restaurant, but nothing there replaces a great home-cooked meal as the aroma fills your whole house. There are not many scents better than good old home cooking.
Who would you share your dream dinner with?
Being a Champagne lover myself I will be fascinated to dine with Sir Winston Churchill as to understand his unpretentious love towards champagne.
What is your greatest extravagance in life?
My extravagance is travel with my partner once a year to explore new places and local food & wine of that particular country. I always come-back healthier, stronger, and emotionally refreshed. It is extended time that allows me to reflect on my life and what changes I need to make to win. It is worth every penny.
What is most valuable to you?
Making yourself and family proud. This has got to be one of the greatest natural highs that you can have in life. To have the people you’ve spent the most time with in your life see you win for them is simply incredible. You can’t buy that feeling with all the money in the world.
What luxury would you want on a desert island?
Luxury on a deserted island for me would be a fine vintage wine, freshly caught seafood, and a companion to create unforgettable memories.
