Krug Clos du Mesnil 2002 exalts the crisp purity of Chardonnay from one of the finest terroirs in the region – a single walled plot of vines, Clos du Mesnil – from a single year, 2002.

The legendary vineyard has been protected by stone walls since 1698 and is hidden within the heart of one of the most celebrated villages for Chardonnay in the Champagne region, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. Its privileged location and small size of 1.84 hectares (4.25 acres), make Krug Clos du Mesnil 2002 a rare gem.

A talk with Julie Cavil

Krug Cellar Master

The year 2002 offered a clement and generous climate – consistently warm and relatively dry – granting ideal conditions for grape maturation. The rare beauty and singularity of the year’s Chardonnay are conveyed by the generosity and aromas inherited from the clement circumstances of an exceptional 2002.
The House of Krug chooses to create Krug Clos du Mesnil only in years that provide the ideal conditions for the full potential of this enclosed plot of Chardonnay vines to be revealed.
Krug Clos du Mesnil 2002 reveals a precise signature and a striking grace, after resting in the cellar for over ten years.

Ratings

"This is a wine with staggering length and immense purity. It's as powerful as chardonnay can be, showcasing an incredible depth of pure fresh lemons, yellow grapefruit, honey and dried white and yellow flowers. This is very silky and focused, offering gently creamy moments before twisting towards a composed, restricted and compressed chalk-like finish. It delivers an impression of chardonnay that captures incredible richness, fleshiness, persistence and power."

James Suckling 2020
RATING:  100/100

"A lovely, lacy Champagne, with ripe apricot, fennel seed and espresso aromas. This caresses the palate with a finely detailed mousse and expansive flavors of pineapple pâte de fruit, toasted brioche, fleur de sel and grated ginger. Long and chalky on the finish, this is a prima ballerina, showing power cloaked in grace."

Wine Spectator 2020
RATING:  98/100

Tasting notes

At first sight, a bright and luminous golden colour of ripe wheat.
On the nose, aromas of citrus fruit, white pepper and spices, slightly grilled nuts and brioche.
On the palate, it is precise, pure and fresh with tension, vivacity and great balance.
Notes of peach, orange, citrus fruit and liquorice are all enhanced by a very long finish.

I still remember my first glass of Krug, being overwhelmed by a complexity I did not expect from a Champagne. It was one big crescendo, a feast of highlights, the big finale of a huge fireworks display.
