The story of Krug Rosé dates back to 1976. With Joseph’s non-conformist spirit at heart, the 5th generation of the Krug family gave birth to a new composition, a bold rosé inspired by the House’s reputed art of blending, to be re-created each year.

Thus, the first Édition of Krug Rosé, a singular Champagne achieving an astonishing balancing act between finesse and substance, came to be.

Today, the House of Krug is delighted to present Krug Rosé 28ème Édition, the 28th creation of Krug Rosé in the history of the House and the 28th year this dream was re-created.

A talk with Julie Cavil

Krug Cellar Master

This Édition of Krug Rosé is composed around the harvest of 2016, a year of weather conditions so contrasting, they became a caricature of the climatic pendulum. An extremely wet spring, with +70% rainfall versus the norm between April and June, made vineyard work difficult and increased disease pressure. Clement weather ensued from flowering onwards, allowing the vineyard to recover, ending with a heatwave at the end of ripening. The marathon harvest took place from September 9 to October 2 yielding classic grapes in good health and wines all about expression and character, regardless of grape variety or origin.
Krug Rosé 28ème Édition is a Champagne full of vivacity, amplitude and boldness with a liberated element of the unexpected. The broad palette of elegant notes in this Édition is born from a selection of 32 wines from 6 different years, the youngest from 2016, and the oldest from 2010.

Krug Rosé 28ème Édition is a composition that succeeds in marrying wines with contrasting profiles, it creates a virtuoso balance between substance and finesse. On the one hand, white base wines bestow great elegance, chiselled structure, and notes of red and yellow fruits with great freshness. On the other hand, traditionally macerated red Pinot Noir wines from plots in Aÿ and Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, bring colour, substance and spice to the final blend.

After 7 years of rehearsing in the cellars, the Chamber Orchestra is now ready for its live performance, incorporating the necessary element of improvisation that makes each Édition of Krug Rosé surprising.

As all Krug Champagnes, Krug Rosé 28ème Édition will continue to gain with the passage of time. In all, reserve wines from the House’s extensive library made up 38% of the final blend of this Édition of Krug Rosé.

The final composition of this Édition of Krug Rosé is 58% Pinot Noir, which includes the 10% traditionally macerated Pinot Noir, 25% Chardonnay and 17% Meunier.

Tasting notes

At first sight, its subtle pale pink colour holds a promise of elegance.
On the nose, aromas of rose hips, cured ham, mulberries, redcurrant, peony, pepper and pink grapefruit.
On the palate, delicate flavours of honey, citrus and dried fruit with a long finish, enhanced by its fine bubbles complete the experience.

Food Pairing

Krug Rosé lends itself to pairing ideas outside the box. For example, when it accompanies very good quality anchovies, a magical encounter occurs. The saltiness of the fish sublimes the fruit aromas and silkiness of the Champagne, turning the anchovies into a velvet sensation. Krug Rosé can also be enjoyed with foie gras, lamb, game, white meat, venison or even dishes with spices. Krug Rosé is not recommended for desserts, unless they are not sweet at all. Unexpectedly, it best accompanies very savoury dishes.

STORING AND SERVING

The Right Temperature

The House of Krug recommends that its Champagnes be served between 9°C and 12°C, as colder temperatures limit the expression of their flavours and aromas.

The Right Glass

To design a glass that would allow Krug Rosé’s singularly elegant and nonconformist character to be fully discovered, the House of Krug joined forces, once more, with master glassmaker Riedel.

The Influence of Time

Krug offers only prestige Champagnes, the most important characteristic of which is that they will gain beautifully with the passage of time.
