Composed around the harvest of 2008, Krug Grande Cuvée 164^ème Édition is a blend of 127 wines from 11 different years. The youngest is from the year 2008 and the oldest dates back to 1990.

In all, reserve wines from the House’s extensive library made up 32% of the final blend, bringing the breadth and roundness so essential to each Édition of Krug Grande Cuvée.

The final composition of this champagne is 48% Pinot Noir, 35% Chardonnay and 17% Meunier.

In all, over 20 years of careful craftsmanship were necessary to enjoy Krug Grande Cuvée 164^ème Édition.

The cellar master

To complement the elegant intensity of the year’s harvest and craft the most generous expression of Champagne in 2008, wines from plots in the Montagne de Reims Sud were selected for their freshness, as well as from plots in the Côte des Blancs for their spice and warmth.

Krug Grande Cuvée 164^ème Édition was composed around the harvest of 2008. Following a mild winter, overcast spring and cool summer, there was concern over the maturation of the grapes, further compounded by a severe hailstorm that hit the village of Sainte-Gemme, reputed for its plots of Meunier. But in mid-September, the clouds miraculously parted and favourable conditions lasted throughout the harvest, which gave us grapes in excellent health and with a good level of maturity.

This half-bottle spent around 6 years in Krug's cellars developing its generosity and elegance, receiving its cork in Autumn 2014.

FOOD PAIRING

Krug Grande Cuvée lends itself to a wealth of culinary combinations, from the simplest to the most sophisticated, from an aged parmesan to turbot à la truffe.

This Champagne can be enjoyed as an aperitif with Jabugo ham and mature comté or served to accompany oysters, grilled shrimps, Indian or Moroccan food, as well as desserts such as carrot cake, tarte tatin and cheesecake.

Tasting Notes

A light golden colour and fine, vivacious bubbles, holding a promise of pleasure.

Aromas of flowers in bloom, ripe, dried and citrus fruits, as well as marzipan and gingerbread.

Flavours of hazelnut, nougat, barley sugar, jellied and citrus fruits, almonds, brioche and honey.

Serving Temperature

The House of Krug recommends that its Champagnes be served between 9°C and 12°C, as colder temperatures limit the expression of their flavours and aromas.

All Krug champagnes gain in complexity and patina with the passage of time. We recommend storing them at the same temperature as you intend to serve them, between 9°C and 12°C.

"Krug's NV Grand Cuvée 164 Edition is a total knockout. A wine of total pedigree and class, the 164 reminds me of some of the great Grand Cuvées of the 1960s and 1970s I have been lucky to taste over the years. No Champagne lover will want to be without this spectacular, captivating wine. All that said, readers should be patient, as the 164 is painfully young, austere and in need of serious cellaring."
