Krug Grande Cuvée 173ème Édition

The most generous expression of Champagne.

Krug Grande Cuvée is born from the dream of Joseph Krug to craft the very best champagne he could offer, every year, regardless of annual variations in climate.

Each year, Maison Krug honours his vision with a new Édition of Krug Grande Cuvée: the most generous expression of Champagne.

Beyond the notion of vintage, Krug Grande Cuvée is always a blend of over 120 individual wines from more than 10 different years, expressing a fullness of flavours and aromas impossible to achieve with the wines of a single year.

173ème Édition

Composed around the harvest of 2017, Krug Grande Cuvée 173ème Édition is a blend of 150 wines from 13 different years. The youngest is from the year 2017 and the oldest dates back to 2001.

In all, reserve wines from the Maison’s extensive library make up 31% of the final blend, bringing the breadth and roundness so essential to each Édition of Krug Grande Cuvée.

The final composition of this champagne is 44% Pinot Noir, 34% Chardonnay and 22% Meunier.

In all, over 20 years of careful craftsmanship were necessary to enjoy Krug Grande Cuvée 173ème Édition.

Tasting Notes

At first sight, intense yellow gold.

Expressive, fragrant and powerful on the nose with aromas of toast and brioche, stone fruit, verbena, vanilla pastry cream, French toast and baba au rhum.

On the palate, this champagne is unctuous, creamy and generous, expressing flavours aligned with the nose. Nuances of juicy fruits, peach in syrup and ripe citrus give way to encaustic, toasted notes and pine nut. A generous and precise mouthfeel with a crisp, mouthwatering lemon finish calls for another sip.

Oyster, Chamomile & Peppercorn Cream, Cucumber & Granny Smith Gelée, Borage & Oyster Flowers

FOOD PAIRINGS

With outstanding freshness and generosity, Krug Grande Cuvée 173ème Édition lends itself to a wealth of culinary combinations, from the simplest to the most sophisticated, with aperitifs or meals.

It pairs beautifully with simple pleasures like aged parmesan, Jabugo ham and mature comté, but also oysters, or asparagus roasted with garlic butter. Gastronomic options include Moroccan hake chermoula or tarte tatin.

Note:

Serving Temperature

The House of Krug recommends that its Champagnes be served between 9°C and 12°C, as colder temperatures limit the expression of their flavours and aromas.
Note:

The Joseph Glass

In 2011, we partnered with renowned crystalware maker, Riedel, to design a glass that would reveal the fullness of flavours and aromas of Krug Grande Cuvée.
Note:

The Influence of Time

All Krug champagnes gain in complexity and patina with the passage of time. We recommend storing them at the same temperature as you intend to serve them, between 9°C and 12°C.

A TRIBUTE TO TIME

Krug gives time to the unforgettable.

A decade before the presentation of Krug Grande Cuvée 173ème Édition, crafted around the harvest of 2017, Maison Krug revealed Krug Grande Cuvée 163ème Édition, composed around the harvest of 2007. A very limited number of these bottles have been carefully kept in the Krug cellars, awaiting their chance to be rediscovered. This rare case, “A Tribute to Time” is an opportunity to experience time’s precious influence on Krug Grande Cuvée.
