The cellar master
The Meuniers from our plots in Sainte-Gemme and Courmas were remarkably vivacious in 2010 and beautifully counterbalanced the discreet freshness of our Chardonnays from plots in the Côte de Blancs. We completed the blend with a selection of carefully chosen, relatively young reserve wines, most notably from the year 2000 from our plots in Oger for their generous roundness, as well as 2006 wines from plots in Verzy and Bouzy, which added a final touch of elegance and brought harmony.
Julie Cavil, Krug cellar master
Krug Grande Cuvée 166ème Édition was composed around the harvest of 2010. A year defined by its tumultuous climate, the grapes nonetheless showed great promise until the cool end to the growing season brought cause for concern. The careful attention given to the vines during this challenging period and Krug's unique respect for the individual character of each plot proved crucial to ensuring a yield in good health and of ideal maturity.
Unusually, the Chardonnay wines from the Côte de Blancs region did not reveal their habitual freshness, but the House's non-conformist approach to Champagne creation led us to counterbalance this with the vivacity of the year's Meunier wines, such as those from Sainte-Gemme and Courmas.
Time in cellar:
This bottle spent around 7 years in Krug's cellars developing its generosity and elegance, receiving its cork in Winter 2016-2017.
