German artist Christopher von Deylen, the creative force behind the electronic music phenomenon known as Schiller, has woven an unparalleled legacy in the tapestry of modern sound.  He has not only redefined electronic music but emerged as a catalyst for cross cultural collaboration and international connectivity with a vision of music as a transformative experience.

The Krug Lover shares with the House a commitment to craftsmanship and dedication to quality, taking a detail-oriented approach to his art. In 2024, he visited Cellar Master Julie Cavil at the Krug Family House in Reims, where she presented to him the two champagnes of Les Créations de 2011. Inspired by the experience, he created two original Krug Echoes compositions – “Epica”, to accompany Krug Grande Cuvée 167ème Édition, and “Hypnosis”, to accompany Krug 2011, to capture the sensations of the tasting. Both are testaments to his desire to push the boundaries of musical expression, capturing the rich stories of each champagne, as well as their generosity of flavours and aromas.

A talk with Schiller

Do you remember your first sip of Krug?
Absolutely, that first sip of Krug is etched in my memory. It was a moment of pure indulgence, a sensory journey that transcended the ordinary. The generosity, complexity, and finesse of Krug Grande Cuvée unfurled with each sip, leaving an indelible impression. The experience marked the beginning of my newfound appreciation for the artistry of fine champagne.
What do you have in common with Krug?
I believe what I share with Krug is a commitment to craftsmanship and a dedication to creating something truly exceptional. Much like the meticulous blending of the finest grapes to achieve the generosity of Krug Grande Cuvée, I approach my work with an emphasis on quality, attention to detail, and the pursuit of excellence. Krug's philosophy of celebrating individuality and uniqueness resonates with me, as I strive to bring my own distinctive touch to everything I do. It's about a shared passion for pushing boundaries and creating experiences that stand out and leave a lasting impression.
Tell us about your compositions for Les Créations de 2011
Creating the compositions for Les Créations de 2011, specifically "Epica" and "Hypnosis," was a deeply immersive and rewarding experience. "Epica", to accompany Krug Grande Cuvée 167ème Édition, was inspired by the grandeur of storytelling, aiming to capture the essence of epic narratives through intricate melodies and dynamic arrangements. It's a musical journey that unfolds like a compelling saga, evoking emotions and painting vivid sonic landscapes.

On the other hand, "Hypnosis", For Krug 2011, delves into the mesmerising world of trance-like states. The composition is a sonic exploration of hypnotic rhythms and ethereal soundscapes, aiming to transport the listener to a realm where time stands still. The interplay of hypnotic elements and evocative harmonies creates an immersive experience, inviting the audience to lose themselves in the music.

Both "Epica" and "Hypnosis" are testaments to my desire to push the boundaries of musical expression and offer listeners a captivating experience that goes beyond the ordinary. It's about creating compositions that resonate on a profound level, inviting the audience to embark on a transformative journey through sound and emotion.
How did Les Créations de 2011 inspire your compositions?
Les Créations de 2011 served as a profound wellspring of inspiration for my compositions, "Epica" and "Hypnosis." The collection's thematic elements, particularly the rich tapestry of stories and the exploration of hypnotic experiences, ignited my creative spark. The textures, emotions, and nuances found in Les Créations de 2011 were not just a muse; they were a guiding force that shaped and elevated my compositions to reflect the essence of this remarkable collection.
How do you approach pairing music and champagne?
Pairing music and champagne is a delicate art that involves tapping into the subtle nuances of both sensory experiences. I approach it as a harmonious collaboration between sound and taste, aiming to create a multisensory journey. Understanding the intricacies of the champagne, from its flavour profile to its effervescence, guides my choice of musical elements. I consider tempo, tone, and mood to craft an auditory landscape that complements and enhances the tasting experience. It's about creating a synergy where the music doesn't just accompany the champagne but elevates its character, turning sips into a symphony of sensations.
What parallels do you see between composing music and crafting champagne?
Composing music and crafting champagne are both art forms that demand precision, creativity, and a deep understanding of one's medium. In both endeavours, there's an intricate balance to strike – whether it's harmonising notes or blending grape varieties. Both processes involve a meticulous layering of elements to create a seamless, immersive experience. Additionally, the pursuit of perfection and a relentless commitment to refining every detail are shared principles. Ultimately, whether orchestrating a symphony or curating the complexities of a champagne, it's about crafting an experience that resonates deeply with those who engage with it.
