IT IS THE STORY OF A YEAR WITHOUT EXCESSES THAT CREATED THE CONDITIONS FOR A SLOW MATURATION RESULTING IN A PERFECT BALANCE OF FRESHNESS AND FRUIT. KRUG 1988 WILL TAKE A WHILE TO EMERGE AS A KRUG COLLECTION AND WILL BE ALWAYS A TIMELESS IMPRESSIVE CHAMPAGNE. KRUG 1988 IS A TREASURE TROVE OF EMBLEMATIC SAVOIR-FAIRE FROM THE HOUSE OF KRUG.
This very rare bottle of Krug 1988 is one of the 200 bottles kept in the House of Krug, after this Krug Vintage was released, until 2015.
This bottle received its cork in spring 2015 and leaves the House after resting over 25 years in the Krug cellars gaining in complexity and refinement.
Krug 1988 was created and crafted to be different, to be the full expression of the year 1988. A year with character, a year with a special story to tell in a way that Krug alone can relate. Krug 1988 is the story of this year captured by Krug; there are as many stories as there are Krug Vintages. The first of the trilogy of Krug Vintages of 1988, 89 and 90. Krug 1988 is undoubtedly the subtle elder sister of 1989’s louder, younger exuberance, this is why it was released after Krug 1989 was presented. Krug 1988 is the most highly rated Champagne in the world in the last 25 years (wine-searcher 2014). This very special bottle of Krug 1988 belongs to the very few bottles of Krug Vintage kept in Krug’s cellar to follow their evolution and in a very exceptional way, are presented to the markets later.
The year 1988 alternated perfectly between heat and rain (until harvest which took place between September 26th and October 6th), a year without excesses that created the conditions for a slow maturation keeping a very high level of freshness. The result was extremely balanced harvested grapes, a perfect equilibrium between freshness and maturity.
Being 1988 such a particular year, the creation of Krug 1988 was obvious. Krug 1988 is the blend of very refined and promising wines with solid structure, high freshness, extreme elegance, directness, purity, crystal and sharp finish. Krug 1988 is the blend of very expressive plot’s wines of Pinot Noirs (50%), Chardonnays (32%) and Meuniers (18%) from 21 villages, giving birth to a reserved, elegant, very classy and stylish vintage.
Krug 1988 stayed a bit close for quite some time, very discrete, nearly austere at the beginning but elegance and refinement have always been tangible. Today after more than 25 years in Krug’s cellars it is entering into a new, expressive phase, it is opening up beautifully; all that was hidden and shy and needed coaxing is now revealing itself. I am confident this Vintage will take a while to emerge as a Krug Collection and will be always timeless impressive Champagne. Krug 1988 is a treasure trove of emblematic savoir-faire from the House of Krug.
Upright structure and the solid acidity not found in particularly hot years, Krug 1988 reveals sharp purity. In the mouth, it is full of sensations: orange blossom, dry figs, ripe quince, and mild spices such as cinnamon and ginger.
With a crystal finish and lingering palate, Krug 1988 is a treasure trove of emblematic savoir-faire from the House of Krug.
Storing & serving

Krug has created The Joseph, a unique crystal glass whose shape enables the bubbles to reach their optimal expression and allows the discovery of the incredible bouquet of aromas.
If you do not have The Joseph glass, you may prefer a white Burgundy glass to a flute, to enable the expression of Krug Champagne’s flavors and aromas.
As a Prestige Cuvée, Krug Champagnes age beautifully, the time revealing their richness and elegance.
Your Champagne should be stored in a wine cellar, or in a cool (between 10 to 15 °C - 50 to 59 °F) dry and away from light place, the exact conditions of Krug cellars.
The delicacy, elegance and charm of Krug 1988 creates a delicious contrast with rich and unctuous dishes. Perfect with turbot in hollandaise sauce, bass in butter, chicken served with a cream sauce and desserts with a base of dried fruits. Both almonds and dishes bearing hints of vanilla would also be wonderful companions, enlivening the most daring of palates.
