A Musical Approach to Champagne Creation

At Krug, each individual plot of vines gives birth to a unique wine which is kept separately for the utmost precision and harmony. This allows Krug’s Cellar Master to identify and discern wines that can enrich each year’s creation in the most harmonious way. In musical terms, each plot of vines is a musician and each grape variety, an instrument, while the year is the musical score. Krug’s Cellar Master is the conductor, auditioning musicians from the harvest year, as well as from previous years, who will perform together the symphony of Champagne. This musical masterpiece is called Krug Grande Cuvée, the most generous expression of Champagne, re-created every single year, regardless of climate variations.

The Symphony of Champagne 

The circumstances of the year uniquely shapes each musician’s melody. Krug Grande Cuvée 170^ème Édition was crafted around the harvest of 2014, an erratic year in Champagne that oscillated between hot dry spells and cool rainy periods. This musical score gave rise to wines with diverse aromatic expression. Thus, when composing the new Édition of Krug Grande Cuvée, Krug’s Cellar Master decided to accentuate the expression of these individualities with a broad spectrum of reserve wines, from 11 previous years. These older and more mature musicians – some of them dating back to 1998 – had been rehearsing in Krug’s cellars, all these years gaining in depth and resonance. Once selected during the auditions, all musicians rehearse together, smoothly and peacefully in the depths of the Krug cellars. Around 7 years later, Krug Grande Cuvée 170^ème Édition emerges, a full orchestra of 195 musicians from 12 different years. In all, 24 years of careful craftsmanship have been necessary to create this Édition of Krug Grande Cuvée.
