About a decade after I stepped into the role of Krug Cellar Master in 1998, I was presented with a treasure from the past. It was the personal notebook of Joseph Krug, the House’s visionary founder, revealing his unique approach to creating a Champagne the likes of which had never been tasted before.
With an uncompromising philosophy, he laid the foundation for what inspires and guides me every day of the year: the idea that each of the individual wines with which Krug Champagnes are composed has its own personality, from its origin as an individual plot to its particular role in the blend. It was his enduring belief that only by paying the utmost attention to every single element could he offer the very best Champagne every year, regardless of variations in climate. From this vision sprang Krug’s unique art of understanding each plot as a single ingredient.

Upholding Joseph Krug’s philosophy is an honour that I am able to enjoy thanks to the House’s relationship with its winegrowers. From the very first moment I step into the vines, I strive to understand the character of each plot that they already know so well. With this knowledge in mind, every year, I draw upon around 250 wines of the year and 150 reserve wines from 14 different years, as well as 4000 tasting notes from the Tasting Committee to create the fullest expression of Champagne. Each Édition is created anew and its unique story is revealed via the Krug iD on the back label of every bottle.

It is that deep understanding of nature and a tireless pursuit of creating unforgettable experiences that I share with the Krug Ambassade Chefs, who every year create Krug food pairings based around a single ingredient.
This year, they set out on an adventure at sea in search of fish. Just as no two plots are the same, so no two fish are the same. As you will discover when you dive deeper into the Krug x Fish experience, each chef harnesses those fish in truly inspiring and diverse ways.
I hope you will see that at the heart of this adventure is a human connection to the earth – or, in this instance, sea - the fishermen were to these chefs what the winegrowers are to the House of Krug: it is their passion, rigour and attention to detail that allow us to bring the philosophy of individuality – the cornerstone of Krug’s craftsmanship – to life.
