The House of Krug invites you to discover the intensity, individuality and purity of Krug Clos d’Ambonnay 1998: from a single plot, a single grape variety – Pinot Noir – and the harvest of the year 1998.

Clos d’Ambonnay is a tiny walled plot of 0.68 hectares located in the heart of Ambonnay, one of the most distinguished villages for Pinot Noir grapes in Champagne and the main source of Pinot Noir for the House since its earliest years.

Krug Clos d’Ambonnay 1998 is the third Champagne from this unique plot of Pinot Noir. The first was created with the harvest of 1995.

A talk with Julie Cavil

Krug Cellar Master

1998 at Clos d’Ambonnay was a classic year full of contrast – typical in Champagne – with an extremely hot month of August followed by heavy rain. At Clos d’Ambonnay, this resulted in astoundingly intense, delicious grapes that from the first tasting sessions hinted at the wonderful potential of Krug Clos d’Ambonnay 1998.

The House of Krug chose to reveal Krug Clos d’Ambonnay 1998 because the year 1998 succeeded in fully expressing the potential of this tiny small walled plot.

Krug Clos d’Ambonnay 1998 has intense golden colour with hints of red tones.
On the nose, amazing aromas of milky caramel, barley sugar, toast, blackcurrant, red fruit jam and jellied fruits. On the palate you may find intense notes of wild fruit, tarte tatin, brioche, redcurrant and liquorice, enhanced by an elegant long finish.

Ratings

"A powerhouse, featuring well-sculpted acidity and rich mineral character, showing an overall sense of finesse, with a palatecaressing texture and beautifully layered flavors of crème de cassis, black cherry pâte de fruit, treacle, dried papaya, clover honey, fennel seed and ground spice, ringing out on the finish. Drink now through 2035."

I still remember my first glass of Krug, being overwhelmed by a complexity I did not expect from a Champagne. It was one big crescendo, a feast of highlights, the big finale of a huge fireworks display.
