Krug from Soloist to Orchestra in 2008 — Act 1

30 August, 2022

Krug from Soloist to Orchestra in 2008 – Act 1  is a chance to discover three expressions of an unforgettable year in Champagne.

At Krug, each individual plot of vines, through its wine, is considered to be a fine musician that contributes its own unique character to a Krug Champagne.

Krug Clos du Mesnil 2008 – the purity of a single walled parcel in 2008 – is a virtuoso soloist, while Krug 2008 is an ensemble of musicians playing the music of the year. Krug Grande Cuvée 164ème Édition, composed around the harvest of 2008 with a blend of 127 wines from 11 different years, is an orchestra playing the symphony of Champagne.

The House of Krug is delighted to present Krug Clos du Mesnil 2008 after over 13 years in our cellars. This cuvée completes the trio of Champagnes we call Krug from Soloist to Orchestra in 2008 – Act 1: an exclusive limited-edition case comprising three creations from an unforgettable year in Champagne.

A balanced and cool year

The year 2008 was one of Champagne’s coolest in 14 years, and also one of the region’s least sunny in almost half a century. A superb vintage, it was a classic northern climate, one that has not been seen much since. Rainfall was normal, the summer was dry, and temperatures were constant throughout the growing season. This absence of extremes resulted in slow and steady grape maturation. Under these circumstances, the fruit was intense, elegant and
beautifully structured.

Due to the cool and balanced climate of 2008, which made for an outstanding vintage, the grapes could take their time to mature in tranquillity, ultimately exhibiting beautiful freshness upon harvest. Surprisingly, despite these mild and constant conditions, we observed great heterogeneity from plot to plot.

The Soloist

The House of Krug invites Krug Lovers to discover the Soloist, the extreme purity of a Champagne from a single plot, a single grape variety Chardonnay and the harvest of a single year: 2008.

Krug Clos du Mesnil 2008 is an extremely elegant Champagne offering delicate aromas of citrus, lightly toasted aromas, orange madeleine and the menthol signature of this small plot. The enticing palate exudes citrus in all its forms grapefruit skin gives way to ripe and candied citrus flavours and notes of barley sugar, with a delightful bitterness.

The Small Ensemble

A Krug Vintage is a blend of the most expressive wines from a single year, enhanced by a stay of over ten years in the cellars. Every Krug Vintage is different: it is the music of the year, captured by Krug. Krug 2008 is a story of harmonious intensity, complementarity and contrast, nicknamed “Classic Beauty” by the House’s Tasting Committee members.

For Krug, the year 2008 gave birth to a great Krug Champagne balancing structured freshness and diverse flavours. Krug 2008 exhibits both power and elegance with a textured and intense mouthfeel very characteristic of the year’s wines, which uniquely reconciled intensity and quality.

The Orchestra

Krug Grande Cuvée 164ème Édition, composed around the harvest of 2008, is a blend of 127 wines from 11 different years, the oldest dating back to the harvest of 1990 and the youngest to that of 2008. To complement the elegant intensity of the year’s harvest and craft the most generous expression of Champagne in 2008, wines from plots in the Montagne de Reims Sud were selected for their freshness, as well as from plots in the Côte des Blancs for their spice and warmth. In all, reserve wines from our vast library comprise 32% of the final blend.
