WHAT DOES COOKING MEAN TO YOU?

Cooking is my means of expressing thoughts and emotions, allowing me to communicate my sincerity, passion and experience to anyone, regardless of background or language. This art form is my life, hobby, language and cultural identity.

A talk with James Won

This art form is my life, hobby, language and cultural identity.
Which person made you love the job?
From a tender age, I remember rushing home from school to discover what my grandmother had prepared for afternoon tea because she would always surprise me with something new – she never limited herself to Chinese cuisine. My grandmother would experiment and try to replicate or improve upon any recipe she tasted, which is what I do today.
What is your earliest memory of an experience with the pepper in the kitchen?
As a child, I was exposed to the pepper in different sauces, fermented peppers, curries and stews for lunch, dinner and even breakfast. The pepper has historically been part of our culture and we Malaysians will even bring our own when we travel to Western countries for fear that food may not be bold enough.
Do you remember your first glass of Krug?
My first memory of Krug is shared with my mentor in celebration of my milestone decision to pursue my own culinary voice. It was a bittersweet moment, as I had just tendered my resignation and it was difficult for me to leave such a great team. From that point forward, I associate Krug with those occasions so special, they are forever part of our cherished memories.
If you could prepare a meal with a Krug pairing for anyone in the world, who would it be?
My late father. He was a food lover. He would have enjoyed being part of my journey elevating our humble Hakka Chinese dishes to the world’s gastronomy stage.
